Most items are made from oak, which I obtain from two sources; my log pile and a local supplier to the landscaping industry.
Logs come from a ground care company based in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, who provide tree surgeon, woodland and forestry management services, and sell the by product of their work as seasoned firewood through The Berkshire Firewood Company. I pick out the better logs and turn them into usable lumber, using my bandsaw, planner and thicknesser. The resulting planks are short, so I use them for my smaller craft items.
I need larger lumber for the kubb sets and long antipasto boards, so I source the oak from a local importer who supplies landscapers and cabinet makers. I do not use recovered railway sleepers, because these are likely to have been sprayed with chemicals used to keep the tracks free from vegetation and are likely to be steeped in oil and other nasties).
The beech chopping boards are made from my old kitchen worktops and the items made from Ash, such as the phone/table holders and letter racks come from the dead branches that occasional fall from an old ash tree in my garden.
